What has ARSONORE always offered at its annual opening concert? You\u2019ve got it: a celebration sparkling with splendour and glory. This year, two magnificent FAZIOLI grands will be given centre stage, where four top-class pianists will captivate their audiences with virtuosity and fiery musical wit. The great thing is that all four come from Ukraine and will thus be showcasing the outstanding school of piano-playing for which their country has long been famous.The programme centres on Gustav Holst\u2019s suite The Planets, which could hardly find a better-matched acoustic setting than the Planetary Hall in our dream castle of Eggenberg. In addition, the four pianists \u2013 the well-known piano duo of Elina Akselrud & Denis Zhdanov, plus Roman Fediurko, winner of the Vladimir Horowitz Piano Competition, and his highly talented prizewinning little brother Oleksandr \u2013 play long-forgotten jewels of the piano repertoire for two to eight hands that are guaranteed to delight their listeners.<\/p>\n\n

When Cornelius Obonya recites from masterpieces of literature by writers ranging from William Shakespeare to Virginia Woolf and his readings alternate with music by composers from Haydn and Beethoven through to Benjamin Britten, the ARSONORE audience will be expecting a wealth of new discoveries. For hardly any other festival regularly makes so many new finds as we do. A perfect example: this programme features a work with a special refined opulence all of its own, the magnificent and unfairly neglected Piano Quintet by Ralph Vaughan Williams.<\/p>\n\n

Following a cherished and very successful tradition, this concert is a showcase for exceptionally talented young musicians, some very young and all with numerous prizes at international competitions to their credit. Another artist to look forward to is the much-loved actor Wolfram Berger, who will once again give us a dazzling display of his versatility and gift as a humourist in readings from Charles Dickens to Oscar Wilde.<\/p>\n\n
